If you ever need to escape the noise of the world, The Orchard Hideaway in Beilby, York is the perfect place to do it. I stayed there recently, and it was exactly what I needed—a quiet, secluded spot where I could completely switch off. And I mean really switch off. The phone reception was terrible, and the WiFi barely worked, but instead of being frustrated, I loved it. There was something freeing about not constantly checking my phone or being distracted by notifications. It felt like a proper retreat.
There are only two wooden lodges, set far apart from each other. This layout ensures you get complete privacy. My lodge was cozy and beautifully designed. It had a little living area, a fully equipped kitchenette, an en-suite bathroom, and a bedroom with a comfy double bed. Everything about it felt peaceful, from the wooden interiors to the stillness outside.
One thing to keep in mind is that it’s not the easiest place to get to without a car. The buses only come once an hour. With the bad reception, calling a taxi or Uber would be tricky unless you pre-book it. So, if you’re planning to visit, make sure you have your transport sorted.
The owner, Helen, was lovely, warm and welcoming. She ensured I had everything I needed for a enjoyable stay. There’s also a hot tub, but it’s wood-fired, and you must pay extra for the wood. I didn’t use it since my goal was to completely switch off. However, if you’re planning a romantic getaway or want the full experience, it might be worth considering.
Honestly, I left The Orchard Hideaway york feeling lighter. It’s the kind of place that reminds you how good it feels to slow down, breathe, and just be. If you’re looking for a break from everything but still want the option to explore, I can’t recommend it enough.
I captured a little of that day in a video over on my Instagram — the vibe, the food, the feeling.

If you’re staying at The Orchard Hideaway but still want to explore, York has plenty to offer. Here are some of my recommendations:
York Minster is one of the most stunning cathedrals in the UK and a must-visit. The intricate architecture and stained-glass windows are breathtaking. If you're feeling adventurous, climb the tower for a panoramic view of the city.
Walking through The Shambles feels like stepping back in time. The overhanging timber-framed buildings and independent shops make this one of the most charming spots in York. Don’t forget to take photos—it’s picturesque!
A walk along York’s medieval walls is a great way to see the city from above. The full circuit takes about two hours. However, you can always do just a section if you prefer a shorter stroll.
If you’re interested in history, the Jorvik Viking Centre is fascinating. This immersive museum takes you back to Viking-age York, complete with realistic sights and smells!
Clifford’s Tower is an iconic ruin that offers one of the best viewpoints in the city. It’s a great spot for photos and learning a bit about York’s rich history.
If you fancy a traditional English afternoon tea, Betty’s Tea Room is the place to go. It’s a bit pricey, but the experience is worth it, especially for the delicious cakes and teas.
A relaxing way to see York from a different perspective is taking a River Ouse Boat Cruise. There are daytime and evening cruises, both offering a peaceful ride along the river. It’s perfect for unwinding after a busy day of exploring.
Whether you're catching up on relaxation at The Orchard Hideaways or exploring the rich heritage of York, you're bound to have an unforgettable experience. The combination of serenity and adventure around will rejuvenate your spirit and create lasting memories.
